In a state parched by a three-year drought, wildfires are at least
partly to blame for the price increases, industry officials and even
some consumer advocates agree.
Reporting from Sacramento - As California heads into another
season of wildfires that have been growing more frequent and more
ferocious, homeowners are facing higher prices to insure their property.
In the last year, some...

OCEAN SPRINGS — It was just another in the rush of federal suits against
Mississippi insurers last August, just before the three-year statute of
limitations after Hurricane Katrina expired.
Except it wasn't. Without a lawyer, then-77-year-old Maralou Richards of
Ocean Springs filed a handwritten complaint against a unit of AIG, at
the time the world's largest insurance company.
Richards made a...

My View
In the strongest possible terms, we urge Gov. Charlie Crist to veto the home insurance deregulation bill, SB2036/HB1171.
This bill is an invitation for insurers to game the Florida regulatory system and abuse consumers. No price can be too high, no discrimination can be found
unfair if a policy is issued under these terms. The regulator can only come in and raise prices if an insurer goes...

TALLAHASSEE — Both supporters and opponents of a bill that would
partially deregulate Florida’s property insurance market are fiercely
lobbying Gov. Charlie Crist as he nears a decision about whether to sign
the bill or follow his apparent instinct to veto it.
Crist formally received the bill late last week and has until June 27 to
decide. But he has for weeks signaled his distaste for House...

Not one Floridian has been spared from the challenges of these tough
economic times. Yet a bill that would allow a select few, big property
insurance companies to sneak unrestrained, unregulated and unrelenting
rate hikes on unsuspecting consumers will arrive at Governor Crist’s
desk over the coming days.
The Residential Property Insurance Bill HB 1171 is one of the
most egregious...

The fight is heating up against legislation that would allow large
property insurers to raise rates without state approval.
Eight consumer groups including the Consumer Federation of the
Southeast and the Florida Public Interest Research Group have implored
Gov. Charlie Crist to veto the bill passed by the Legislature earlier
this month.
"This amounts to another bailout this time for major...

A Florida bill that would allow some insurers to charge rates above
those approved by the Office of Insurance Regulation provided they meet
certain capital requirements has drawn the ire of consumer groups.
In order to charge rates above those approved under H. B. 1171—also
called the “consumer choice” bill—a carrier must have a surplus of at
least $...

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist yesterday indicated he may veto the “Consumer
Choice” bill that would eliminate rate restrictions on some home
insurance.
The governor said an unregulated insurance industry would be unfair to
consumers.
His comments came as controversy mounted over the measure and the bill’s
sponsor called the state insurance...

Four consumer advocacy groups implored Gov. Charlie Crist today to veto a
bill that would allow large insurers to charge essentially unregulated
rates.
"This bill is an invitation for insurers to game the Florida regulatory
system and abuse consumers," said officials from the Consumer Federation
of America, Consumer Watchdog, Center for Economic Justice and United
Policyholders in a letter to...
